There are two types of pf perfectionists: Positive perfectionists and negative perfectionists.
Similarities:
Both set high standards and are goal oriented.
Both work very hard and care a lot about doing well.
Both have strong skills because of the effort given.
Differences:
Positive perfectionists are achievement oriented.
Negative perfectionists are failure oriented.
Examples below:
Winning a race:
Positive perfectionists want to win the race.
Negative perfectionists don’t want to lose the race.
School:
Positive perfectionist spends more hours than necessary working on a paper in order to master the course material and advance his learning beyond what is required.
Negative perfectionist spends hours on a paper for fear of getting a B instead of an A and losing his 4.0 GPA.
Workforce:
Positive perfectionist works hard at a job in order to get a promotion, to receive praise, or receive a raise in salary.
Negative perfectionist works hard at a job to avoid being fired or having their boss displeased.
Take away:
If you are a negative perfectionist there are ways to help. Compassionate and positive self-talk is imperative. It takes a lot of practice because it is not natural. In the end everything in life is worthwhile even if it is not perfect. When it is not perfect you must analyze what happened and problem solve to try again.
